OKLAHOMA CITY – El Reno High School senior Jon Grube advanced to the second day of the 92nd Oklahoma High School Wrestling Championships, only to fall a win shy of a shot at placing.
Grube was pinned by Del City’s David Green at the 4:18 mark of their 132-pound match in the consolation semifinals.
A win would have pushed Grube into the consolation finals and a shot at standing on the medals stand. Instead, Grube closed out his career with a 29-9 record and Green advanced on to take third place.
Elisha Leonard and Grube became the first El Reno wrestlers in three years to make the state tourney.
Grube, the fourth-place qualifier from the west, drew a tough opening round assignment in East Regional champ Will Steltzlen of Collinsville – who went on to claim the state title. Grube fought off a first-period near fall attempt by Steltzlen for 52 seconds to fall behind 6-0 after one.
Grube trailed 13-0 after two periods, fighting off yet another pinning move by the Collinsville senior. He cut the deficit to 13-2 with a takedown at the 1:41 mark of the third period, but allowed a takedown and a third 3-point near fall en route to an 18-2 technical fall loss.
El Reno crossed paths with Suburban Conference foe Piedmont in the next round as Grube emerged victorious with a takedown in the sudden victory to secure a 3-1 decision.
Leonard was not as fortunate at 160 pounds. He drew East Regional runner-up Jake Barton of Collinsville in the first round. Leonard allowed a takedown with 1:01 left in the first period and trailed by a 2-0 margin after two periods when he failed to escape in the second period.
Barton logged a reverse to open the third period and rode out Leonard for over a minute and a half to secure the 4-0 win.
Leonard wrapped up his junior season with a 22-13 record after losing in the first round of consolations with a 14-2 major decision setback to Tanner Borror of Coweta.
