A fourth-period rally fell a basket shy of its mark as Union City High School’s girls basketball team dropped a 38-36 decision to Agra in the consolation championship of the Paden Pirate Invitational.
The loss dropped Union City to 1-2 for the event and 10-10 on the season.
“We were the better team but we made a few mistakes in the end that were very costly. We had a few free throw blockouts that failed and open layups not go in.
“We had a chance at the end to tie or win it but we turned the ball over. I think if we play them five more times, we beat them four of those games,” said UCHS head coach Ludy Griggs.
The Tigers trailed 27-24 after three periods, but went on a 12-11 scoring edge to keep the game close. Chelsea Rackley scored four points in the fourth period, while sister, Braedyn had three points. Brooklyn Walls and Macie Gillock added two points each and Cassie Allread a free throw.
Chelsea Rackley closed with a team-leading 10 points, two boards, two assists and a steal. Allread was close behind with eight points, three caroms, two assists and a steal.
Walls added seven points, four boards and a pick. Braedyn Rackley closed with five points, three steals and two caroms. Gillock chipped in four points and five boards, while Kwyn Bollinger had two points, two boards and a pair of assists.
Union City 57, Graham 31
The Tigers had nine players in the scoring mode, led by Braedyn Rackley with 16 points, five steals, three boards and two assists. Walls followed with 11 points, four boards and two steals, while Chelsea Rackley added eight points and a rebound.
Allread chipped in six points and three steals, while Gillock had six points and nine rebounds. Hanna Landry closed with five points and two rebounds, followed by Bollinger and Layci Barger with two points each and Shyann Norwood with a free throw.
Classen SAS 38, Union City 25
The Tigers were held to single-digit scoring in all four periods and had only six players in the points by game’s end.
Allread paced the effort with nine points, three boards and a steal. Walls followed with four points, two rebounds and an assist.
Chelsea Rackley had three points, four boards and two dishes, while Bollinger chipped in four points and four steals. Gillock closed with six rebounds and three points to go along with two points and a pair of rebounds from Braedyn Rackley.
Tigers settle for fourth
Union City High School’s boys basketball team was outscored 22-18 in the fourth period by the host team as the Tigers settled for fourth place in the 2013 Paden Pirate Invitational.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-11 on the season.
Mason Kane was a one-man scoring machine for the Tigers in the fourth period with a trio of 3-pointers and 13 points total. Devin Chilton added three free throws.
Kane closed the game with six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 35 points. He added six rebounds, four assists and a steal in the losing effort. Trevor Harris added 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.
Will Krivanek led those in single digits with four points and two assists, while Derek Duffey had three points, two boards and two assists. Chilton had three points and eight rebounds to go along with Chance Maddox with three points and three rebounds.
Nick Le logged seven rebounds and two steals, while Chris Scarborough pulled down three boards.
Agra 69, Union City 51
The Tigers dropped into the third-place game with an 18-point loss to the Bearcats, despite a 21-14 run in the fourth period by Union City. Kane had two 3-pointers in the rally, while Harris led with eight points. Jake Stanley and Victor Lopez had three points each.
Kane led all UCHS scorers with 15 points, five assists, two boards and a steal. Harris added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Lee closed with 13 points and five boards.
Duffey added four points, Chilton with two and Tyler Dehart a free throw in the loss.
Union City 69, Victory Life 64
The Tigers outscored the Durant-based club in three of the four periods, leading 15-12 after one period and 33-29 at the half. The teams both scored 15 in the third period before Union City posted a 21-20 edge in the final quarter.
Kane bombed five 3-pointers en route to his 33 points. He added six assists, three rebounds and two steals. Le scored 14 points, six boards, three assists and a steal.
Harris added 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Duffey and Chilton scored four each and combined for five boards.
