KINGFISHER – Madison Lee scored seven points in the fourth period to lead a 16-13 scoring edge as Okarche High School’s girls basketball team defeated Piedmont 59-56 to win the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Tournament.
The win over the Wildcats, ranked No.7 in Class 5A, lifted Okarche (No.1 in Class A) to 20-2 on the season and extended its current win streak to six straight.
The game was tied at 43-all going into the fourth period, but Okarche got points from four different players in the frame. Kenadey Grellner added four points, followed by Madi Grellner with three and two from Morgan Vogt.
Okarche led 12-6 after one period after getting four points from Kenadey Grellner and three each from Vogt and Madi Grellner. Piedmont would outscore the Warriors 37-31 over the middle two periods to force the tie, despite OHS getting 10 points each from Vogt and Lee.
Lee closed with a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and a steal. Vogt added 15 points and five boards, while Kenadey Grellner had 12 points and seven caroms.
Madi Grellner followed with nine points and six rebounds, while Rae Grellner added six points, three boards and a steal.
Okarche 62, Bethany 38
Kenadey Grellner led the win over the Broncos, ranked No.15 in Class 4A, with a near triple-double. The sophomore had 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Okarche led 14-8 after one, 35-17 at the half and 57-32 to start the fourth period.
Vogt added 21 points, six boards and a steal, followed by Lee’s 17 points, nine caroms and a pick. Madi Grellner closed with three points and four boards, while Rae Grellner added three caroms and a steal.
Okarche 60, Clinton 41
Vogt led three players in double digits with 23 points, three caroms and a steal. Lee added 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while Kenadey Grellner closed with 14 points and five boards.
Madi Grellner led those in single digits with six points, five caroms and a steal. Rae Grellner had three boards, a rebound and a free throw. Chelsea Mueggenborg grabbed one rebound.
Boys drop two straight to larger schools
KINGFISHER – Despite double-double performances from Sam Grellner and John Schaefer, Okarche High School’s boys basketball team dropped a 57-50 decision to Heritage Hall in the third-place game of the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Tournament.
The loss to the No.19 (4A) Chargers dropped Okarche (No.8 in Class A) to 1-2 for the event and 14-8 on the season.
Okarche led the contest 38-30, but committed five straight turnovers. Heritage Hall held a 52-50 lead on OHS as the Warriors missed two free throws and a possible tie.
Okarche ended the game shooting 16-of-25 from the free-throw line, including a 5-of-10 effort in the fourth period. The Warriors had one basket in the final frame, a 3-pointer from Schaefer.
The Warriors shot 15-of-38 (40 percent) from the floor in the loss, and were 4-of-13 from the 3-point arc for 33 percent. Grellner led the way with 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a steal. Schaefer added 17 points, 13 caroms, two assists and a pick.
Wyatt Carter followed with eight points and two rebounds, while Bennett Oshman added three points, four assists, two caroms and two steals.
Elijah Petty chipped in two points and three boards, while Chris Rund had a free throw.
Piedmont 65, Okarche 62
The Wildcats, ranked No.8 in 5A, were on the ropes most of the game after Okarche hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first period and 11 points from Grellner for a 22-11 lead.
Okarche led 31-22 at the break and 42-40 after three periods. Piedmont rallied in the fourth with a 25-20 scoring edge.
Free throws were the downfall for Okarche, which hit 22-of-37 attempts for 60 percent – including a 14-of-23 effort in the second half.
Grellner posted a double-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Schaefer added 12 points, eight boards and two picks.
Carter recorded eight points and three caroms, followed by Oshman’s six points and three from Shay Pratt. Ben Annuschat and Rund had a free throw each.
Okarche 41, Kingfisher 39
The Yellowjackets led 39-38 with 40 seconds to play, but Grellner hit two free throws to lift the Warriors back into the lead. Okarche added a late free throw.
The Warriors were 8-of-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth period, while adding a 3-pointer from Kyle Rother. Okarche was 14-of-19 from the line for 74 percent for the game.
Grellner closed with 15 points and eight boards, followed by 12 points and five rebounds from Schaefer. Carter added six assists, five points and three caroms.
Pratt, Hunter Frisby and Rother added three points each.
