In one of its toughest tournament outings of the season, El Reno High School’s wrestling team placed three entries at the 2013 Chickasha Tournament en route to a 14th-place finish.

The 21-team event was chock full of the state’s premiere wrestling programs including Class 4A’s top-ranked Tuttle and six teams ranked in the top 10 of the Class 5A poll.

Twelve of the teams in the top 15 of the final standings are ranked. El Reno finished with 53 total team points, edging out Guthrie by half a point. The Bluejays hold the No.8 spot in the 5A poll and defeated EHS earlier this month in a head-to-head dual.

Jon Grube was the highest El Reno placer, taking third following a close 8-7 win over Southmoore’s Drake Hodges at 132 pounds. The El Reno senior posted a 5-1 record which included a first-round bye and a 15-0 technical fall loss to Comanche’s Jon Townsend.

Grube defeated Tuttle’s Colton Medina (1:42), Piedmont’s Reece Henry (3-1) and Tyler Dodging of Berryhill (2:12) to get into the third-place match.

Elisha Leonard wrestled to a fifth-place finish at 160 pounds after dropping an 11-1 decision to Duncan’s Christian Carnahan, whom he lost to by a 9-1 count in the second round.

Between those losses to Carnahan, Leonard collected two byes and falls over Piedmont’s Jesse Coleman (1:24), Duncan’s Tyler VanOven (:31) and Josh Jacobson of Waurika (1:39).

Murdoch Marcum posted a 5-3 record en route to a sixth-place finish at 195 pounds. His losses were to Duncan’s Marcus Stewart (10-3), Southmoore’s Jacoby Walker (5-4) and Chickasha’s Sam Richardson (fall).

Marcum defeated Marlow’s Quinton Maxfield (1:14), Guthrie’s Jose Perez (1;24), Lawton Ike’s Bryson Primacio (:44) and Dennis Pletcher (9-1) and Deer Creek’s Grayson Johnson (4:10).

El Reno had six other wrestlers in the event as Kyler Samples posted a 3-2 record at 195 pounds. He defeated Perez (:52), Maxfield (1:22) and Chickasha’s Anthony Outhathaivy (2:44).

Brannon Townsend had a 1-2 record at 152 pounds including a close 5-0 loss to Marlow’s Nick Yates. Wylie Hokett picked up three byes at 145 pounds, while Levi Jones went 2-2 at 138 pounds – which included a narrow 2-0 setback to Westmoore’s Austin Troutman.

Preston Golden dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Heights’ Bryson Grino to end his 138-pound run with a 2-2 mark. Brady Lippoldt lost twice at 113 pounds, including a 4-2 setback to Deer Creek’s Carter Cooper.
