Frank H. Phillips
Frank H. Phillips passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at St. Katharine’s Drexel Retirement Center. Mr. Phillips was born June 5, 1923, in Eldon, Iowa. He stood out in athletics, lettering in basketball, football, baseball and track during his high school years. Frank and his family moved to El Reno during his teen years. At 18, in the summer of 1942, he worked for Conoco Oil in Ponca City, and then in October 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After basic training in San Diego, he served in World War II as a Navy Aviation Machinist in the New Hebrides Islands for 19 months. After this stint, he was based at Navy bases in Florida, California and Texas, receiving training both in Navy gunnery and piloting B-24s.
In 1947, after the war, he worked briefly for the railroad as a fireman hauling grain around Enid and Ponca City, and also worked on passenger trains between Waurika and Caldwell, Kan. Frank began college at Oklahoma University in Norman in 1947 where he met his future wife, Marjorie Irene Smith. Their marriage lasted from 1948 until Marni’s death in 2007. Frank retired from the Federal Reformatory in El Reno in 1975. Frank’s favorite pastime was playing golf and did so almost every day until a few years ago, even making two hole-in-ones.
Frank is survived by daughters, Tana Frantz, Kyra Escott and husband, Rick, and Camilla Sheehan and husband, Paul; grandchildren, Tyla Khosravi and husband, Phil, Tanner Escott and wife, Lisa, Trace Camarillo and husband, Anthony, Marisa Frantz and partner, Colin Zaug, Ben Frantz and wife, Nakia; and niece, Michelle Webber and husband, David; great-grandchildren, Kadence and Kyah Khosravi, Tatum and Triston Escott, Asia Frantz and Gus Camarillo (coming in February).
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; parents, Ralph and Alice Phillips; sister, Doris Orman and husband, George; and nephew, Danny Orman.
Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church with Rev. Ronnie Fields officiating. Interment will be in the El Reno Cemetery. Services are under direction of Wilson Funeral Home.
