Memorial services for Larry Smith of El Reno were held Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church during Sunday worship services with Rev. Jan Burns-Hintze officiating.
Larry passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, after a prolonged illness. He was born March 21, 1937, in Pike County, Ohio. James Larry Smith married Marla Orvilla Nerland on June 19, 1960, in Roslyn, S.D. They met while both were working for the FBI in Washington, D.C. Larry served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. The family moved to El Reno in 1966 when Larry transferred to the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution, where he worked as a purchasing agent among other job titles. He retired from the prison in 1987 and began part-time employment at Sunset Bowl for approximately the next 16 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, as well as American Bowling Congress, VFW and the American Legion. Larry was an avid bowler, who also loved many other sports, including softball, as well as fishing and working in the yard. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Pauline (Wipert) Smith; a brother, John “Jack” Smith; and a sister, Susan Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Marla Smith of the home; son, Kevin Smith; and numerous other relatives and many dear friends.
